Is The National Defense Authorization Act The Latest Threat To The Black Family?

Every year, the U.S. State Department issues reports on individual rights in other countries, monitoring the passage of restrictive laws and regulations. For example, America looks critically at other countries for denying fair public trials, undermining due process, using secret evidence and torture.

Even as America judges countries considered lacking freedom, many vocal white Americans have expected that any definition of a free nation would include their own country — the so-called land of the free.
Instead, America has vigorously campaigned to reduce civil liberties in the name of a stronger security state since Sept. 11, 2001. An example of this is the National Defense Authorization Act or NDAA that allows for the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens.  You might ask:
  • “HOW COULD THE NDAA AFFECT ME OR MY BLACK FAMILY?”
The U.S. federal government has the power to arrest you indefinitely in prisons outside of America in the NDAA Section 1021.
  • “I’M NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE NDAA, BECA– USE I’M NOT DOING ANYTHING WRONG.”
Well, you should be concerned somewhat.  Black, African American, Afrodescendant people have never had the full enjoyment of civil liberties.
In our past, America has blatantly violated our rights to free speech, a fair trial, etc., through COINTELPRO infiltrations, policies that result in mass incarceration of Black, African American, Afrodescendant people and more. Knowing this causes many of you to stay silent on many issues even to this day.
The national security powers America has evoked are a kind of montage of powers which causes America to now resemble countries America has criticized as lacking basic individual rights–such as due process–placing U.S outside of recognized definitions of “free.” The NDAA promises also to prevent those who want to come forward with information vital to the public from doing so.
From where Black, African American, Afrodescendant stand, we have always experienced the unchecked powers of America in the form of Transatlantic Slavery, the unfulfilled promises of an Emancipation Proclamation, Jim Crow laws, Tuskegee experimentation, and institutional racism. Now, the ‘War on Terrorism’ police state is certain to make us the usual suspect.
Nevertheless, even though a lack of basic freedoms is not new to us, it is definitely not something to which we should continue being accustomed.
As solutions, some would like to stop the NDAA with permanent injunctions, sue the Obama Administration over the NDAA, or repeal the mandatory military detention requirement.
But what should you do, my fellow brother and sisters? For decades, our people have struggled to exercise a basic rights. Should you seek a solution of your own? Moreover, what of Afrodescendants, our siblings who reside in countries whose constitutions say it guarantees freedoms and rights, yet these governments deny them rights and blockade real avenues for citizens to challenge them.
The LFNOI, on behalf of the Afrodescendant Nation, humbly submits another solution to you:
* You can recognize that a government of our own, an Afrodescendant Nation, can help us to further self-determine, decide our own destiny, and enable us to say what laws we want governing our life.
It is your right to do so.
If you are a non-Muslim Afrodescendant, you should visit your local mosque to participate in the dialogue and work now for self-determination in the Afrodescendant Nation.
